Frank Shepard Fairey is an artist born and raised in southern California and now works and lives in Los – Angeles. Frank is a graphic designer who works on the streets as a public artist. He was involved in art when he started to place and stick his drawings on t-shirts and skateboards. Frank graduated from the college of Idyllwild Arts, located in California. In the year of 1992, he was awarded a ‘Bachelor of Fine Arts’ from the school of Rhode Island. Fairy started gaining attention from the public when he first released his artwork of ‘Andre the Giant Has a Posse [OBEY]’ campaign sticker. The poster was an image that portrayed a picture of the recently professional wrestler, whose stage name for his career was Andre, the Giant. The poster also included slogans like “This Is Your God”.

Praiseworthy and Brilliant

The Institute of Contemporary Art, still to this day calls him one of the most talented and brilliant street artists. Fairey has been involved with different types of controversies that have consisted of allegations, copyright etc. Critics have accused Frank of stealing other artists’ work and ideas to benefit his own, as well. They have also accused Frank of exploitation of street imagery, but regardless his artwork remains excellent. Shepard has used stencils, stickers, screenprints and more techniques to create his artwork and paintings.

Frank combines various techniques of pop art, business art, graffiti and Marxist theory. He thought it was fit to involve the imaged art of, now Ex-president Barrack Obama as he created a portrait for the president while elections were still running. Of course, when Obama won the election, he sent his thanks in a personalized letter to Shepard Fairey for his contributions and support he received from the public too due to his poster. The Obama poster won the Brit Insurance Design of the year in the year of 2009. Shepard Fairey has managed group and solo exhibitions all over the world.

The public audience was really intrigued by his various type of art during his exhibition. The different types of strokes and techniques that were used were illustrations, drawings, stencils, screen prints, or collages. Some of the most memorable and exceptionally well exhibits were the ones held in Birmingham, Capsule, New York, Minneapolis, Los Angeles and England. He went on several business trips to host these exhibits.

Shepard is currently living in California where he has two daughters, Madeline and Vivienne with his wife, Amanda. If you are intrigued to see the various artworks created by shepherd Fairey, there are several of them showcase at places like The Smithsonian, Museum of Contemporary Fine Arts [which is located in Richmond], Los Angeles County Museum of arts or Albert Museum which is located in London. In the year of 2011, when the Arab Spring Protests started, the Time magazine recruited Fairey to design and create the cover image for the ‘Protester as the person of the year’.
